"Plastic skin" is almost never one setting. It is three small smoothings added together: a detailer pass that repaints the face, a refine chain that resamples the whole image, and an upscaler that interpolates texture away. Each is defensible alone. Together they turn a photograph into a figurine. This lesson is about which of them you actually need for a given picture.

Face detail without the plastic look
FaceDetailer, refine passes and upscalers each smooth skin a little. Stack three and you get the airbrushed look everyone complains about. When to use each, and the settings that keep pores.
